How the 90/180 rule is calculated

For every day of stay, the previous 180 days are checked. Your total short stay in the Schengen Area must not exceed 90 days within that rolling window.

The rule applies to the Schengen Area as a whole. Travelling from one Schengen country to another does not reset the counter.

Stays authorised by an EU residence permit or a long-stay D visa are generally not entered as short stays in this calculation.

What does the Schengen 90/180 rule mean?

For a short stay, the general limit is 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. It is not calculated by calendar year or fixed six-month periods.

Is the 180-day period fixed?

No. The window moves forward every day. Older stay days eventually leave the window and may restore part of your allowance.

Do entry and exit dates count?

Yes. Both the day you enter and the day you leave the Schengen Area count as days of stay.

What if I enter and leave on the same day?

A same-day entry and exit counts as one day.

Which trips should I add?

Add your short stays in the Schengen Area. Enter every trip separately.

How far back should I enter previous trips?

The last six or seven months are often sufficient, but entering all short Schengen stays from the previous year is safer when unsure.

Should I add time spent outside Schengen?

No. Do not add stays in non-Schengen countries.

Should I add stays under a D visa?

Generally, no. Stays covered by a national long-stay D visa are not treated as short stays for this calculation.
